Docs and post-docs

The Biological and medical sciences (SBM) research department brings together 6 research units and 1 support and service unit, all dedicated to biological and medical scientific research.

The scientific scope of the department includes research on host-microorganism interactions, the immune and vascular systems, rare diseases, inflammatory diseases, and cancer.

The SBM Department is responsible for promoting research by fostering synergies among the units to consolidate and enhance their strengths. The department works to increase the visibility of the units and supports their activities by implementing several joint initiatives (sustainable development, transversal training for doctoral students, communication, seminars, etc.) and providing support to young researchers.

Thus, various tools are made available to doctoral and post-doctoral researchers, in addition to the Doctoral School, to help them strengthen their oral communication, develop their argumentation skills, and cultivate critical thinking.

The SBM’s Young group, which brings together young researchers in the department, has organized several activities:

The battles

The debate battles train doctoral students from the SBM Department and other research departments in a unique way, focusing on public speaking and argumentation. Through a debate on a societal issue, in front of an audience of around 60 university colleagues, the teams argue for 40 minutes on a chosen subject. Then, key witnesses provide a summary and perspective. Two teams of doctoral students (for and against) are formed in advance by university researchers for the scientific content, by a debate specialist, and by the University of Bordeaux’s communication department.

Gar'O'Sciences: Scientific Mediation – Why, How and For Whom?

On Thursday, December 15, 2022, young researchers organized "Gar'O'Sciences", an event focused on scientific mediation.

A variety of actions and initiatives were presented. Participants—including researchers, doctoral and postdoctoral students, and project leaders in scientific mediation from the University of Bordeaux and beyond—had the opportunity to discuss scientific mediation and exchange their views.

Career Seminars

In March 2024, the SBM's Young group organized a Career Seminar focused on the private sector, inviting Kévin Alessandri, a scientist and co-founder of Treefrog Therapeutics, and Lucia Espinoza, a technician at the company. Treefrog Therapeutics is a biotechnology company based in Bordeaux, focused on developing cell therapies for millions of patients suffering from conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. The speakers presented their academic and professional backgrounds, as well as their current roles. A portion of the seminar was dedicated to student questions, sharing experiences, and providing advice from the speakers.

Social events

To bring together the young researcher community, more festive events are organized: a pétanque competition took place in the summer of 2021, and a "Welcome SBM’s Young" kickoff meeting was held on November 16, 2021.

In January 2024, SBM’s Young organized its first International Food Fair. This event provided an opportunity to bring together international doctoral students around culinary specialties from various countries, allowing them to connect with the young researcher network of the SBM Department.

Whether you are a Master’s student, a doctoral student or a young post-doctoral researcher, join the SBM Young group!
