Sentinels of the sea: what does the health of marine animals tell us about the state of the environment and how can scientists help to make a change?
- Abstract
Marine animals are sentinels of the environment. In polluted areas, fish are prone to liver cancer, but could possibly develop defence mechanisms, if they are exposed for many generations. For long-lived seabirds, eating polluted seafood can impact their own health, but also the health of their unborn chicks. My research does not however stop at sea – I want to help move towards solutions. This includes preventing pollution reaching to the sea by restoring nature in urban areas, restoring healthy rivers, and raising awareness about urban nature and marine animal health.
